Which movie industry really has the top grossing films? (US, India, Korea, Japan, etc) ?
Q. Just curious because one of my friend is Indian and she keeps telling me that Bollywood movies are more popular, yet I've never even heard of one in my life. I am more of a Korean, Japanese, Chinese, US films type of person. So considering that India is the 2nd most populated country in the world, that's probably where the "popularity" is coming from. She also tells me that they make 1000+ movies per year, but all I can think of is that the quality may be really poor that's why they can produce so many movies. Also I keep checking for top grossing films but most of the sites I visited only list out the US movies even if they say top movies in the World. I would really like to know what is the highest grossing film besides Titanic, etc… [cont.]

A. Bollywood may have some very high attendance records but not the highest grossing films. On average, Hollywood blockbusters grossed 33 times as much as Bollywood ones.

A. No, the Dark Knight did the best globally and is lagging Titanic (all-time box-office no.1) by just 50 million. Mamma Mia however broke the Titanic's hold of the no. 1 spot in the UK, but falls short of breaking either The Dark Knight or Titanic's overall record. Hope that clears it up for you. By the way, do not trust user comment on IMDB though.

Q. I have just joined IMDB and saw a post on the mamma mia boared from an obvious fan of abba. Dont get me wrong i like both dark knight and mamma mia. Please no biased answers! please be non biased. 1. Did mamma mia really make more money then dark knight globally, i presume they mean world wide? 2. is that chart out of date or accurate? 3. Does the site in the link about have an internationall chart, ie non US chart - overseas etc? 4. I was very very suprised to see this look at the over seas, apparenltly dark knight took more overall, over seas? wow! shocked! unless this is out of date? if it is what are the latest figures for the overseas chart? 5. If mamma mia didnt do the best globally, overseas etc why would someone write this on… [cont.]

A. Hi Laura C 'Mamma Mia' and 'the dark knight are two entirely unrelated films. they dont share a common genre or even a common target audience, therefore it is a moot point as to which is 'better' then the other.' I like IMDB. As a source of info, it is truely excellent. but i'd never get into the petty in-fighting and opinion bashing on the boards there (I can do that here, in the R&S section on YA!)

How was The Exorcist NOT recognized in AFI's 100 All-Time list??
Q. The Exorcist, the highest grossing horror film of all time still today, was not recognized in AFI's 100 list. This just baffles me, especially when you consider the criteria for the selection: Major Award Winner: CHECK! William Peter Blatty won Best Screenplay at the Oscars. Popularity Over Time: CHECK! Still much-discussed and considered a rue horror classic by many film peers. Historical Significance: CHECK! Was the highest grossing film of all time before Star Wars was released. Was the first to introduce 'staggered' cinema releases, a model still used by the major studios today! Cultural Impact: CHECK! Show me a movie, TV show, book or anything feature demon possession or supernatural events and I'll show you something that is… [cont.]

Did YoU HeAr aBouT AvAtAr?
Q. James Cameron's "Avatar" has persistently, almost insolently, refused to have any sort of decent drop-off since its opening weekend. Now, after six weeks of international release, the film is still number one at the box office, and has now bested "Titanic's" record worldwide gross, according to both Box Office Mojo and The Hollywood Reporter. The new magic number will be verified later today, but it will be just ahead of the $1,843,201,268 posted by "Titanic," also written and directed by James Cameron. However, it is also unquestionably true that "Avatar" does not hold the record for most paid admissions. Bear in mind that ticket prices have risen over the years, and on top of that, people are paying more to see "Avatar" in 3D and/or… [cont.]

A. Well yeah I know that was a fake ranking, I thought most knew that. The truth be told you should be going by tickets sold not by money. They go by money though so they can make newer movies sound like they are bigger then they really are.

Is Avatar really number 1?
Q. Hey guys. Today, "Avatar" surpassed the $2 Billion mark, just 2 days after passing "Titanic's" all-time worldwide gross of $1.86 Billion. Obviously, this makes "Avatar" the highest grossing film of all time. BUT, adjusted for inflation, "Avatar" stands at a humble 20th place on the list, well behind "Gone with the wind" number one spot. So is "Avatar" really #1? (Take into account the amount of movies released today, as opposed to maybe one a week back in the 30's.)

A. Your point is well taken, but since there have never been any allowances for monetary value fluctuations, ratios, etc. - I'd have to say Avatar is #1.
